Feeling Drained

I am really tired. Have been sleeping late these few nites because i have been either staying late in the office or bringing work back to do till past midnight. Sigh ..... have not prepared stuff for tomm 10am meeting yet. Poor me - how i long to go to bed now but well, i can't. Still have to work after shower.

I think i'm beginning to feel quite drainned physically and i told myself today that i better take care. If not, i won't be surprised if i am near the 'breaking down' zone.

Everyone wants a piece of me during the day and most things seems urgent. My gosh ... there's endless meetings and deadlines too. No time to even take a short break.

Enjoyed tonite's short chit-chat session @ mcdonalds with mabel & cecilia after cg just now. It was like a good pampering time for me. The gp did a test of their spiritual gift. I didn't have the time at all to do it during the day nor at cg coz. was late. Well, will do it over the weekends or friday nite and see how i fair.

It was a pure coincidence too. I led P & W and chose the song "Oceans will part". It was apparently cecilia's presentation song for tomm's keyboard session too.

Geylang - a colourful place

Geylang - a place where u either love or hate. For me, i love the beef horfun and the 24hour beancurd place at Lor 9. The drawback is the heavy traffic. It's difficult to get a parking lot too. Certainly not a place which i'll like to go if i'm the driver coz. i simply hate parallel parking. I'll rather give up on my craving. There's afew times when i had a sudden craving and decided to go there. But somehow, never manage to get a parking lot. In the end, i just gave up and return home with an empty stomach. The last which i manage to satisfy my craving is well, because i took a bus there.

It's a place where i passed by quite often because it's just about 10 - 20 mins ride away from home (depending on traffic). Tonite, i passed by Geylang again but i was fortunate to be in the car. We stopped at the traffic light and wow, dad and me were really surprised that the street was lined up with many prositutes hanging around waiting for businesses. There were many of them. A quick glance at the gals and you could tell that majority are not local. It was a mixed group, some were really young and pretty while others were older and well, not your model-looking babe kind. Dad said he spotted some men hanging around them. The men were probably in charge of them. Wow ... suddenly, it sounds quite scary.

My heart just goes out to them. I mean, i really wonder what made them do it. Was it out of their own free will or were they forced into it. I've read many cases from papers and magazines. It's sad at times to know that we are all humans but everyone is just so different. They are the unfortunate ones and each will have their own story to tell.

This reminds me of DA, DY & JN"s story when we were in Cambodia. Well, one of them told me the story when we came back to Singapore. They met a local gal who somehow, related her life story to them. It was a sad case as to why she had to turn to prostitution. She had no choice. And i believe many do not have a choice either.

This Week

1) At last, feels more festive at work & at home coz. the christmas tree is finally up. My colleague even passed me streamers to decorate my office door.

2) The irritating white ants attacked my bookshelve and some of my books had to be thrown away. The previous time, it attacked my basket which had my certifcates in it. And the last was my CDs. Sooner or later, i think the white ants would destroy my certificates. Anyway, it's the third 'unfriendly' visit of the year. Had to throw away the bookshelve. Hmm ..excuse to buy new furnitures from the new Ikea @ Tampines.

3) Am blessed bec. i'll be going to China with my extended family (dad's side) next feb and the trip will be sponsored. But still, i hope to somehow have the $$ to go to either Vietnam, Bali, Shanghai or most ideally, Europe to visit John, Patricia, Kimberly & Stephanie. That depends on year-end bonus i suppose (if any).

4) Heard from dad that Uncle Robert is in hospital for brain operation.

5) Understand that Uncle Henry & Auntie Wah had house blessing today in their new home. Auntie Gay will bring grandma there. For relatives, including mom who's non-christian, they wondered why they got converted. They concluded by saying that it's funny.

6) Auntie Phoon told me that Yongjian, my cousin has left for Guangzhou to work. Even if she didn't tell me, i wouldn't know if he has gone overseas to work since we hardly meet.

Anyway, just hope that it's less hectic next week and i'll get more time to spend with friends & most importantly, God.

My Cousin's Wedding

This week passed well really fast. Didn't have the time for much, including checking my personal emails, catching up with friends, or even reading the papers or magazines. It suddenly becomes a luxury. It has just been work and nothing else. Pathetic me! Suddenly, social life seems to have diminished. Didn't have much time even for myself which is really bad. How i missed having time to just call up friends to chat or simply, spend time with them.

But on wednesday, i was glad to be able to meet up with a friend & her baby for a late dinner. She has just returned from their month-long trip & it was great to spend some time together.

Sunday & Monday - it was my cousin, JW's wedding. The first grandchild who got married from my mom's side. Obviously, everyone was quite excited.

It was great to spend time with my extended family (mom's side) and cousins. Sunday was her customary wedding while monday was the dinner. JW had her solemnisation @ her new home.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It was also 'the day' that for the very first time, all the cousins got together and took photos. Everyone was there except Yen who's outstation in the states for a month. Can't believe it, everytime there's no food on the table, we would be taking photos.

Cousins posing with Auntie Gemma. My brother was really funny. He was wondering where he was in the picture. The photographer apparently cut him out from the picture.

This picture is like taking class photo & the photographer made us pose in different manner.

It was also at her wedding that i bump into a friend, my classmate actually. Have not seen YL for 12 years since we left school and now, it turns out that she's my cousin's colleague and good friend. I know her by the name YL while my cousin knows her by the name of Clarissa (the one who's wearing black).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Anyway, YL was her mandarin emcee for the nite. Wow ... didn't know that her mandarin is quite good. Oh well ... it's been a good 12 years since we last met. Who knows ... she could be a chinese teacher too since they are all teachers. But hmm ... didn't remember her chinese being so power during school days.

The groom read this out to the bride outside the house. While i applaud him for the good effort, i thought he was reading it more like a script. Ha ha! Didn't realise that he had so many photographers till i see this photo. Thus, collectively, there must be thousands of photos taken.

This is the groom's 'script'. His friends apparently made him put on lipstick at the gate, kissed it on the paper before reading it.

These are some of the 'works' of Shen, one of my cousin's creation. He's a designer and i've always loved his work. He's put in alot of effort with Joyce to put up the final touches. He's the one that edited their clip for the nite too. I wonder where he found the time to do it.

These are the photos which means alot to me coz. .....

It's the first time my bro & me took a 'proper' picture with my grandma (mom's mom)

MC

I must be crazy. Went to see the doctor this morning and he wanted to give me MC. He asked me twice n i said actually said no. On other occassions, i would be more than happy to get it.

What to do ... work is pilling and had a couple of meetings in the afternoon which i can't missed. In the end, had to work OT and was the last to leave office.

Singapore Motorshow

My counterparts gave me complimentary tickets to visit Singapore Motorshow today and i'm glad to have the camera with me. It's suppose to be a 'recee' trip but i think i was looking at all the cool-looking sports car rather than doing what i am suppose to do. Ha ha!

From Mazda, there's MX-5, the first car which i saw when i entered the hall.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

The MX-5 boasts the world’s fastest electrical operated roof opening and closing retractable hardtop that takes only 12 seconds to retract as compared to the conventional 25 seconds retraction time frame.

And i find the Suzuki LC really cute and cool. This LC concept car is a charming recreation of Suzuki's first car, the 1955 Suzulight, a two-seater microcar just 3.2 metres long. Highly recommended by Wee Min whom i bump into at the hall.

Taxi Protocol

I was waiting for a cab together with my bro. just now @ the taxi-stand and it was interesting to hear the guy next to me explaning to a tourist on her question regarding 'taxi-protocol' in Singapore.

During the wait, many cabs wasn't picking up passengers. Infact, most were on-call or changing shift. Thus, the guy was teaching the lady how to distinguish which are the ones that are on-call, on-hire or why it seems that some passengers were 'jumping queue'.

In the end, the lady said ... oh ... but it seems alittle complicated.

But i know that many of the tourists gets really upset because they think that Singaporeans are really rude and always jump queue. But well, that's just a misunderstanding. They didn't know that the taxi-driver is going off somewhere and since the first person in line is not going to the same destination, priority goes to the next in line.

It's interesting to hear from tourists perspective at times.

The Youngest Babe In The Office Celebrating Her Birthday

Celebrated Xuefen's birthday in the office on thursday and well, looking at the number of candles on the cake, she turns 23 officially on friday. In a way, she's the youngest babe in the office (minus the interns).

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

She joined us only this year (can't remember when) but being the office administrator and seats at the reception area, somewhat, she plays a very important role. Hee hee ... U'll have to get through her before u get to reach anyone in the office. That includes phone calls, mails and anyone who comes to the office for meetings.

Stresses of Life

I am feeling really stressed & frustrated lately. So much deadline to meet and working with not-so-easy working partners. After all, everyone who has worked with them knows that they always have a hard time working with them and simply drives u up the wall.

One thing for sure, i know that i will never be happy being a supplier. I would still prefer to be a client. J use to tell me that if possible, always be at the top of the chain. After being the client and did "client servicing" before, i truly understand this statement. Anyway, just hang on ... two more tough months and it'll be over. What i need now is really to rely on God's strength to pull me through this much hated and dreadful period.

Right now, it just seems that everyone is depending on me for feedback, suggestions, instructions & information. Even those that are more senior than me. There's those at the top, and those at the bottom. My gosh .. harlow .. i have only one pair of hands and the same amount of time as all.

Just cheesed me off that i had to miss class yesterday bec. of work. Anyway, arranged to meet up with Y & S for dinner. Told them that i just need to destress and no way am i staying in the office. And guess what happened? Just as i was about to leave office, my partner called to ask for some work to be done and get costings etc. How timely. So in the end, had to quickly get it done. And of course, i was late. Didn't help when u are all ready to relax and enjoy dinner and phone call came in to ask about work. Give me a break! I mean i am fine with calls after work and stuff. It's just that this person has been giving me a tough time today, asking things from me the whole day and always expecting me to give it to her by her stipulated time. Hey, she's not the only one who's busy and trying to cope.

Sometimes, i find it draining and the weight pilling on me. I can't complain to anyone in the office, not to anyone at home. Friends ... well, i know many are stress too. Haven't had the time to speak to some of them for awhile. So, it's just between God & me.

Well! Mom called me in the office this afternoon to tell me that dad fell down today as well. Seems that he hit against the car tyres and injured his head and his spectaculars broke too. He was in town, couldn't drive and called my bro to bring him to the doctor. Have not seen him yet coz. by the time i reach home just now, he was already asleep.

When i heard this, it reminded me of my fears. It was something which is always on my mind. My fears has always been my family members/ parents fall sick or ill and it'll just be my bro and me to handle it. And my prayers to God is that please, don't let me be the only one to handle such situation. Keep them safe and sound and healthy. I know this is life. There are ups and downs. But the downs ain't easy most of the times. It certainly ain't something i would look forward to. I know there are many friends who are going through tough times with their family members ill and it ain't easy dealing with it. What can i say but this is life! And yes, God .. please help!

Songs & Notes

Went for my regular choir practice last nite but was rather disappointed with myself. In fact, i was already feeling disappointed during last week's vocal class. I didn't have the stamina to sing high notes. Couldn't sing a proper sentence without stealing breath in between. Was it because i had missed lessons twice? Lost the momentum? Didn't spend time practicing? Wasn't putting in effort? Couldn't concentrate or what? It's just irritating. OK ... in a way, i felt a little injustice to the teachers and the songs.

All my music teachers will tell us that if u want to sing, sing properly. Very sadly, i couldn't do it. I felt as if i couldn't even 'face' myself with such standards. For a moment, it seems that i had forgotton all the skills which i was taught overnite and a sense of worry did overcome me. I guess i wasn't feeling too well and was about to fall sick anytime.

True enough, woke up with a slight headache and sore-throat this morning. Was down with fever by the time i reach office but was glad that i felt better after 'self-medication' (herbal tea, panadol & strepsils).

By evening, was well enough to go for cg. Jeff & Doris brought their 1 mth old baby gal, Jaydn to cg and it was great to have baby around. Can u believe it, just last month, baby was still in Doris's tummy and now she is out attending her very first cg session. Time flies!

Lesson learnt: Have sufficient sleep, drink lots of water, take care of your vocals & put aside time to practice. So that's what happens when i did none of these for the past weeks. And i know what's the culprit - must be the mangos & Pili Nuts which i brought back from the Philipines & Durian Chips from Bangkok that got me in trouble. My gosh!

Singapore City Scoops

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

This book is highly recommended and was featured in either URBAN papers or IS Magazine last week. I checked out the website and finally bought this book just now. It's available @ Borders & Kinokuniya under the travel section.

I love such books and i know Mabel Lee will like it too. It's Singapore Hip Independent Guide that boldly takes you on, off and beyond the beaten track. It samples Singapore's electic best. It spans the island and zooms on cosmopolitan hot spots, local favourites and hidden finds.

The book is compiled by a team of local and foreign urban currators and gives a rare insiders view to what's spicing up the cities. Check it out!

Perfect treat for me especially after a stressful day. OK ... that's not the real treat. The real treat is my new Nine West shoes. Finally found the perfect pair after many years (i am not joking). Tried on it quite afew times and finally bought it. I just realised something about myself yesterday too. I am simply fussy about shoes. I get paraniod when it's not the rite one.

Your shoe lover signing off. Hope i'm not sounding like Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & The City who's always in her Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik. Well! I'll never own a pair of Jimmy Choo's or Manolos coz. the price is simply exorbitant. But the designs are really pretty. But in the first place, i don't have too many events to flaunt them to.

My Thoughts, My Feelings

What a way to start Monday having given the task to be the 'bad person'.Now i understand how my ex-boss use to feel whenever he complains that he has no choice but to be the bad person. Well! U get paid but is the one to break bad news which people is going to hate u for it. And the one that decides on such is always out of the picture. What to do? I'm not the boss.I'm just a worker.

It's really frustrating when you ask HR aka one of my directors on some benefits for my interns. She agreed and two weeks later when she is less busy, she checked with their school and their teacher told her that we are not obliged to extend certain benefits to them. OK ... so in a way, she is taking back her words and has asked me to be the one to inform them. My gosh .. the interns is going to hate me for that coz. it involves $$.

Can u believe it. She even wants to deduct $$ from their pay since they took MC. Well, she should have told them about it intially and not now. Thankfully, i manage to persuade her to extend the MC benefit to them. But well, i will still need to find a suitable time to talk to them. Anyway, i guess 'playing the bad role' now comes within my job scope. I'll just need to be more tactful and get use to it. Sigh!

Anyway, just got news today that one of the CE who is always in the limelight is down with lung cancer. Not sure how serious it is though. But it sure reminds me that health is really important and yes, i better get back to my exercise regime which i've stopped for a long time. It's time to get back to action. In a way, i miss the good old days of going exercise @ the gym 3 times a week.I miss 'Fitness First'.

Am also a little irritated with myself. I told myself that i will give 100% to God. But on sunday, i find myself giving only 50%. Hey, i told myself before i left the house that it's suppose to be 100%. So what happened to the other 50%. The missing 50% simply left me with little peace. And i know that it's not rite. I repent! Peace ... it's something within me that tells me what's rite and what's wrong. I can run away from many things but not peace. But well, it is also something which has put me in the right path and directions many times. Thank God! And yes, i do repent.

Family Gathering

Had a family gathering today with cousins and relatives from my mom's side. Almost everyone was there except my brother and a uncle. Been a long time since 'attendance' was almost full. When i asked my mom what occassion was it, she told me that it's the 'dowry' day of my cousin who is getting married on Nov 19. OIC.

So, that will be the date when everyone meets again. Anyway, one of my cousin and me were really bored as we were early. So we decided to take a walk around the area. OK ... it was kind of a tour around Frankel/Siglap as we dicovered that there's a famous keuh-lapis shop just five mins away from our cousin's place and also, several of the homes were featured in magazines before. It was nice looking at the various design of houses and now i know .. it's just a 10mins walk to Siglap area where cold-storage, Cafe Cartell etc is.

Wish i could have more time on hand to take nice walks, be it at their place or my place.

As for the wedding, my cousin and my 'cousin-in-law' are both teachers (from different schools). So most of the guests are teachers. Interesting!

Christmas Promo Clip

Of the many Hope Vision clip which i've done since Hope V was set-up, i find that this is one of the cutest. Looking at the penguins, it reminds me very much of Philip Island in Victoria, Australia.

Philip Island is one of the tourist attractions where visitors flock there every evening to see the penguins coming out from the sea. Been there around 5 - 6 times. Each trip is with different groups of people.

Anyway, thanks to MC who did the editing. As usual, it's a last minute production. Only came out with the text and chose music last sun nite and editing was done on mon or tue. But glad that the music fitted nicely. It's from one of the old classical CD which i had. It's called 'Champagne Polka by John Strauss II. Hmm.... so far i have been very lucky. Always manage to choose the right song from my CD collection.

Interns

Through my course of work, i've had quite alot of interns in the office. Some are attached directly to me while the rest is under my colleague in another department.

The good thing about having interns is of course, you get additional help. They certainly add more fun & 'colour' in the office since they are younger. But everyone of them is different. Some are more hardworking than the other, some like to find the easy way out of doing things, some make u really paraniod with their nonsense and excuses, some are more careless, some are really smart and finish things fast. And yes, some of them end up being a friend after they finish their internship.

One thing about me is that somehow, i never quite remember which school they come from. Even after they finish their internship. My colleague overheard the interns talking the other day. One of them passed a comment to a fellow intern that they are cheap labour and had to do general work. I do admit that in a way, they are 'cheap labour'. But hey, they are on internship and is here to learn. The amount is just a token sum for meals and daily expenses. Not really salary. That statement really pisses my colleague off. She was wondering if they had purposely said it loud for us to hear. Hmm!

I have a couple of interns in the office right now and for the past few days, feedback which i received was that interns now-adays are getting smarter and smarter (which i must agree). But well, some know how to 'geng' (pretend) very well.Yeap ... so poor us .. have to find ways to handle them.

But surprisingly, the 2 interns which i really like are both guys. The first is Aaron, my very first intern in 2004. When he started his internship with us, my gosh ... i have never met anyone like him before. He like to talk nonsense, forever hungry, eats alot (but yet so trim and fit bec. he's the captain of the dragon-boat team in his school) and is always late for work. He started off being very blur and careless at work but improved alot at the end of the internship. We like him so much that we wanted to bring him along for overseas project.

We still keep in touch with eachother and infact, he just called me this morning. I will always remember him telling us that he always ask his mom to buy a car. And his mom will always tell him that she will need to sell the house in order to buy a car. So in this case, they shall all live in the car then. Ha ha! We will always joke with him that he doesn't need to do that since he has so many galfriends, esp. the rich gal whom he likes at that time and she has a nice car.

The other is Nelson, the recent intern with the IT department. He's hands-on, friendly & a good worker. Too bad he's young and just went to the army. If he's looking for a job, we will love to have him join us as a full-time staff. He'll be a great asset. He's a tremendously good singer too.

The Philippines - Party Town

I came across 2 books today on my book-shelve which was written by someone whom i really admire in the travel industry. And that's none other than Yeoh Siew Hoon, one of Asia's best respected travel writers. Most people who have been around in the trade will all know her. For me, i don't know her really well but i'm sure she would recognise me. She's closer to my ex-boss and we use to tell him that Siew Hoon is his god-ma. Ha Ha! She's a journalist who certainly knows the ins and outs of the travel business in Asia.

Since i just came back from the Philippines and came across this book entitled :"Around Asia in 1 hr - Tales of condoms, chillies & curries", let me share with you on what she wrote about The Philippines.

And my best memory of The Philippines, hmmm ... one of it is to come up close and personal with President Gloria Arroyo in Vientiane, Laos. She was invited as one of the speakers during an ASEAN Summit conference in 2004. I was managing the event then. She's petite but size doesn't matter. She's a power lady.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Filippinos are known for throwing great parties. Their favorite venue is on the streets. Every time they want to change their head of state, they throw street carnivals where people do the cha-cha to chase out the old guard.

The Western media often run headlines like 'Revolution in Manila; so they can sell more newpapers. Locals often scratch their heads and say, "Hey, we are just having good time."

Philippine politicians are known for having big parties while in power. Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos had the biggest, and longest party of them all until an even bigger street party was held to chase them out of Malacanang Palace.

In fact, down south in the islands of Mindanao, even the baddies are holding big parties with the millions and millions of dollarsb they have earned as a result of kidnapping people who came to the Philippines to have a party, and had their party rudely interrupted.

Despite their problems which would have driven most countries to the land of bedlam, the Filipinos are the most upbeat people in Asia.

They see a silver lining in every typhoon, a goldmine under every earthquake and a calm after every storm. They take comfort in the fact that if one island is affected, they have 6,999 more.

No natural calamity nor political upheaval has yet been able to quell the Filipino spirit. That happy, fighting spirit is probably a legacy of their Spanish-American heritage - that combination of 'manana' and 'sock it to me', mama attitude.

Women run the country and i am not just saying that because a woman is running the country. Yes, President Gloria Arroyo may be pint-sized but she is one strong woman warrior, standing up to the guerills in the south who keep giving her country problems, and bad press.

Women run the country because, well, they do the work. That is what all my Filipino friends, mainly women who run travel businesses, tell me after several San Miguels. We work, they play, they say.

Look too at one of the country's biggest exports - domestic workers. All women. Indeed, Asia owes a mega debt to the Philippines for these domestic workers because without them, its economies would suffer. It is these hundreds of thousands of women who, each year, leave their own homes and families to look after other people's homes and families that enable folks in other countries to go out and earn their living.

After each month, they send their money home, in turn helping the Philippine economy which has been in pretty bad shape since the Marcoses left town.

Another well-known Philippine export is music. Music flows in the blood of every Filipino. And because there are 79.4 million of them and just so many hotels in the country, most have to leave home to seek their fortunes.

That's why every hotel lobby worth its chandeliers in Asia has a Filipino band.

The hotel industry in Asia owes a big debt to these musicians for having created a whole new music culture in the region in which most foreigners wonder why all music in Asian hotel lobbies sounds roughly the same.

Truly though, the Filipinos are the best entertainers in Asia. There is no such thing as bad entertainment when you go to any bar in Manila. And Filipino singers don't just do cover versions, occassionaly they come up with original hits - like the song everyone knows, Anak. It is rumoured that Freddie Aguilar who is believed to be still playing in some bar in Manila refuses to sing the song again, after having had to sing it a million times for visitors and having it butchered in every karaoke bar from Darjeeling to Darwin.

Aguilar should consider himself luckier than Frank Sinatra. Anak, i suspect, has not been as abused as My Way in Karaoke bars.

Talking about bars, Manila is known for having more bars per square mile than ny city in Asia. A close second might be Bangkok. Here, women do all the work too.

Manila is not a city that's easy to get to know though. The traffic can drive you crazy because people drive like crazy, especially the jeepney drivers. Take a ride in one and you will see what i mean - those drivers do not like to drive in straight lines. Where there is a kerb, there is a way, is their motto.

My Manila Trip

A couple of friends have asked me how my trip was. Well! It was a short trip but finally, i got to see how Manila is like. The last time i was in Philippines, it was in Jan when i went to Davao for meetings and exhibition(the southern part of Philippines).

Anyway, i think i have been quite lucky. I have been to almost 70% of the ASEAN countries with the exception of Brunei, Vietnam and Myanmar. I would have had the chance to visit Myanmar many times this year if not for Myanmar who gave up its ASEAN chairmanship, thus loosing a major project there. But really, one place which i would love to visit is Vietnam. I think i would like the place.

Manila - well, the traffic is crazy. When there's smooth traffic, it just takes 20 mins to reach your destination. But when u are stuck in a traffic jam,no kiddin ... it takes more than an hour. I enjoyed meeting up with my counterparts and we had a good time together over dinner and drinks. One of them whom i met previusly over a lunch meeting in Singapore some months back said she love Singapore and wouldn't mind asking for a transferral here. And since she said she love chicken rice, i told her that i'll bring her to Wee Nam Kee the next time when she is here. She'll like it.

Anyway, to beat the traffic jams, my colleague and me took the train to the Farmers Market near to the Cubao Station, which is about a 20mins train ride from Makati. Ha ha ... it seems that we were the only foreigners taking their local train and thus, we saw many pairs of eyes looking at us (esp. from the guys).

While we were at the market, we also met a filippino guy who overheard our conversation and asked us to follow him to some place. My gosh ... my immediate response ... i came out with some excuse and disappeared from him right away. Feeling a little unsafe, we left shortly after our purchase.
